The Recent Evolution of the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC 625 from Hubble Space Telescope Imaging
New HST/WFPC2 imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC625 is presented. These data, which are 80% complete to V and I magnitudes of 26.0 and 25.3 respectively, allow us to study the recent star formation history of NGC625. Using outlying red giants stars, we derive a tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance modulus of 27.95±0.07. This corresponds to a distance of 3.89±0.22 Mpc, placing this...
متن کاملWhite Dwarf – Red Dwarf Systems Resolved with the Hubble Space Telescope: I. First Results
First results are presented for a Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys snapshot study of white dwarfs with likely red dwarf companions. Of 48 targets observed and analyzed so far, 27 are totally or partially resolved into two or more components, while an additional 15 systems are almost certainly unresolved binaries. These results provide the first direct empirical evidence for a ...
متن کاملActive Optics and Coronography with the Hubble Space Telescope
In the eld of planet and proto-planetary disk detection, achieving high angular resolution and high dynamic range is a necessity. Ground images are blurred by atmospheric turbulence and therefore adaptive optics is necessary to achieve sub-arcsecond images. Coronography coupled with adaptive optics on ground-based telescopes is a way to get both good spatial resolution and high dynamic range. H...
متن کاملSagittarius: the Nearest Dwarf Galaxy
We have discovered a new Galactic satellite galaxy in the constellation of Sagittar-ius. The Sagittarius dwarf galaxy subtends an angle of 10 degrees on the sky, lies at a distance of 24 kpc and is comparable in size and luminosity to the largest dwarf spheroidal, Fornax. The new galaxy has many features in common with the other eight Galactic dwarf spheroidal systems: including an extended low...
متن کاملFirst Hubble Space Telescope Observations of the Brightest Stars in the Virgo Galaxy
As part of both the Early Release Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Key ProjeCt on the Extragalactic Distance Scale, we have obtained multiwavelength BVR WFPC2 images for the face-on Virgo cluster spiral galaxy M100 = NGC 4321. We report here preliminary results from those observations, in the form of a color-magnitude diagram for -11,500 stars down to V 27 mag and a luminosi...
